Genesis 2:8; 16-18; 3:1-6; 2 Corinthians 11:3
And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone;
I will make him an help meet for him. - Genesis 2:18
Eve was the first woman ever created. The Bible says that Adam named her “Eve” because she was the mother of all living. Her name literally means “to breathe” or “to live.” She is one of my favorite women in the Bible to study. This is mostly because of her perfection before the Fall. Can you imagine being directly created by the hand of God? Of course, we are all God’s creation, but we have imperfect DNA and genetics. Eve was absolutely perfect! The Bible says that she and Adam were made in the very image of God. I wonder what her body shape was? What kind of personality did she have? What color were her eyes and hair? Maybe the best part of her story was that she had the perfect husband! This is how the Bible says it all started.
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. - Genesis 2:7
Adam was formed out of dust and that is why women joke that men always have “ring around the collar.” But Eve was born into the world a different way. It was so much more special. She was taken from the man for the man.
And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept:
and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;
And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman,
and brought her unto the man. - Genesis 2:21-22
Neither was the man created for the woman;
but the woman for the man. - 1 Corinthians 11:9
I once heard a pastor say that Eve was called a woman because when Adam first saw her he said, “Woe! Man!” In reality, this is what Adam said of his new wife:
This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. - Genesis 2:23
After God made Eve, He said the world was finished and it was very good. I like to say that she was the “crown” of Creation. As a matter of fact, there is a Bible verse that says something similar.
A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband:
but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones. - Proverbs 12:4
Eve was the perfect woman when she was created. She was put into a beautiful garden that was fully created but not complete until she was introduced. That is sobering. The world needed women in order to be whole and complete. This garden was a type of what Heaven would be like. Gardens in the Bible have always been places of rest or communion with God. The Bible even describes how happy a man is when he works with his hands and tells what a blessing it is for him to have a wife and children by likening them to healthy plants.
Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways.
For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee. Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house:
thy children like olive plants round about thy table. - Psalm 128:1-3
And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought,
and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden,
and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. - Isaiah 58:11
Eve’s purpose was to be a “help meet” to her husband. She was also told to be fruitful and multiply with her husband (to bear children). She was made for this specific purpose.
And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone;
I will make him an help meet for him. - Genesis 2:18
It was the perfect life. She even had the perfect wedding venue. The Bible tells us that Adam and Eve were joined together in this perfect garden called Eden. God used their union to describe how marriage was to be ordained for future generations even though Adam and Eve had no earthly parents.
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. - Genesis 2:24
It was a beautiful relationship. This was God’s plan for all mankind. One man and one woman are to marry and multiply the earth. Any other arrangement goes against the perfect model that God established in the Garden of Eden. This was so important that Jesus quoted this Scripture when He was on the earth as being absolute Truth.
And Jesus answered and said unto them, But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; And they twain shall be one flesh:
so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.
What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. - Mark 10:5-9
He even made it clear that God made two genders (male and female) not a spectrum of non-binary people or sexualities. He very clearly proclaimed in His Word how His creation was designed and should continue for all generations. Creation teaches us that man and woman were made in God’s image and are to have dominion over all animals. The world believes man is just another type of animal because mankind evolved from animals and therefore we are equal to them and do not have rights over them. Mankind has moved far away from God and His plan. We must always stand upon God’s Word as we teach our children the truth about Creation versus Evolution, human sexuality, animal rights, the roles of men and women, and the cost of sin. All this and more is found in the story of Creation that started in the Garden of Eden. This is the truth no matter what the world may say! Any other lifestyle is sin. We must, however, be careful to speak the truth in God’s love as we take a firm stand upon His Word.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him;
male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them,
Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it:
and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air,
and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. Genesis 1:27-28
Man’s job before the Fall was to name the animals and to dress and keep the Garden. Eve was not given a specific job. She was to help Adam. The Bible tells us that God walked in the garden in the cool of the day. They had everything they needed. There were no limitations. No sin. No problems. Doesn’t it seem like everything was going great? God told them he had given them every herb bearing seed, every tree, every beast and fowl, every plant, and every green herb for meat. They had everything!
And the LORD God commanded the man saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat. But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest therof thou shalt surely die. - Genesis 2:16-17
There was only one rule. Sounds simple enough. Yet, it was the one thing that the Devil used to get to Eve. It all started by getting her to think differently than God did. He used her human reasoning to get her to question God. He is still doing this today! I often tease my girls that Eve was the inspiration for Disney’s “Little Mermaid.” Ariel sings that she has everything she could have possibly wanted but she still wanted more. Her father told her not to go, but she had to see the world for herself. Unfortunately for Eve, her decision to want more and disobey the Father caused sin to pass upon the whole world.
Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin;
and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned. - Romans 5:12
Adam and Eve were cast out of the garden and punished. Each had their own punishment. Man would now have to deal with thorns as he tendeth the earth and he would sweat from his brow. In other words, work would be cursed. Work is the one thing that men find fulfillment from and now it would be hard instead of enjoyable. Women would now have to be subject unto their husbands instead of enjoying being made for them as their helper. They would also have pain in childbirth which was not God’s original plan. The one thing (becoming a mother) that would bring her the most fulfillment would now bring pain instead of being enjoyable. This was because of the Fall.
Sin brought death and took away their perfection. They would forever struggle with their sinful flesh. Mankind would now need a Saviour. Jesus would have to be born to take away the sin of the world. All people would need to be redeemed. The Bible says this about how Adam brought sin and death into the world, but Jesus brought redemption and salvation for all who would believe.
And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul;
the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. The first man is of the earth, earthy:
the second man is the Lord from heaven. - 1 Corinthians 15:45 & 47
This is why the plan of salvation is so beautiful. It can be summed up in this verse.
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners,
Christ died for us. - Romans 5:8
Have you trusted Christ and had your sins forgiven? You can receive the Lord today and ask for salvation through Christ. Then you will know that Heaven will be your home.
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. - Romans 10:13
The prayer of faith in Christ is what this verse is all about. We would love to help you learn more about knowing for sure you are saved and on your way to Heaven. Eve’s response to the temptations from the Devil could be why he came to her in the first place instead coming to Adam. The Bible says that women are to be honored and valued as joint heirs together with men while reminding us that women are the weaker vessel. This is God’s design.
Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered. - 1 Peter 3:7
If the devil would come to Eve who was the perfect woman and to Jesus Who was God in the flesh, why would we think he would not come to us as well? He does and still is coming to women (and men) in the garden moments of life and twisting the truth. Notice I did not say that he is outright lying. Most of the time, his subtle wiles hold a portion of the truth, but then he maneuvers in some human reasoning so that people are steered off track and away from God, His ways, and His thinking. We must not be ignorant of the devil’s devices.
But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. - 2 Corinthians 11:3
No one is above being tempted of the devil. He even came to Jesus like previously mentioned. The difference was in how Jesus handled him. The devil used Scripture to see if Jesus could be stopped. However, Jesus answered the same way each time He came to Him. His response should be our response to temptation. Jesus said, “It is written...It is written again...It is written…” (Matthew 4:4, 7, 10; Luke 4:4, 8, 12). Jesus responded by quoting Scripture. He quoted God’s words and the devil fled. The Bible says that is the same thing we should do.
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. - James 4:7-8
This is why it is so important for Christian women to be strong in their faith. We need to know what we believe and why we believe it. We need to know God’s plan for mankind so we can teach it to our children and others and not be swayed by the devil and the world’s thinking.
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus. - Philippians 2:5
As we walk with the Lord and learn of Him, our spirituality is renewed each and every day even while being tempted.
For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish,
yet the inward man is renewed day by day. - 2 Corinthians 4:16
Salvation is simply the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ plus nothing minus nothing. By walking with God and having the mind of Christ, we can defeat the devil and live in victory. We can become a “help meet” as the beautiful “crown” that we were created to be!
Ladies, embrace your awesome purpose and you will find fulfillment as a woman. Live in the unshakeable knowledge that God’s plan is best for womanhood. Keep your role simple and clear and do not allow the devil to subtly move you from the promises and design of God’s eternal Word. Remember, you are "fearfully and wonderfully made." You are a "Daughter of the King!"
